The flute player blows across the flute mouthpiece as one would blow across a bottle.

The oboe and bassoon  are double reed instruments.   Double reed players blow into a mouthpiece made of two pieces of cane (arundo donax) tied together.

Professional oboe and bassoon players make their own mouthpieces or reeds.  The clarinet is a single reed instrument.

Clarinet players blow into a mouthpiece made out of hard rubber that has a single piece of cane attached to it.
