I composed the One Song Universus because  nature and our beautiful world is very important to me, as it is to all of us.

When we think of the environment we should be thinking of ourselves as part of it . Often we think of  the environment as something separate from us.

In the one Song there is a simple melody that is part of everything that holds the world together.  In this story people forget that everything is connected and need every other thing so things fall apart. Then they have to rediscover this knowledge to put the world right again.

I wrote this music for school children in particular based on my experiences doing  100’s of school concerts.I wanted them to hear colorful symphonic music that had complexity and was challenging for the students but was  still understandable. The style I composed in is close to film music which has a language of it’s own and has become part of popular culture.

There are 2 versions of the piece. The concert version is about 38 minutes long (about the same length as Peter and the Wolf). It is narrated as a continuous story.

The school version is quite a bit shorter but has interactive sections and the students are an active part of the story. The part of the narrator can be assumed by a member of the community or a teacher.

There are a series of tasks/tests that the students must complete to advance to the next part of the story. If they answer correctly they join in with the march on to the next section. if they answer incorrectly...........

At root this is a story about the interconnectedness of all things and a story about how we carry the seeds of change inside us.

Technical

Technical requirments

  • A space larges enough for all the students and 11-15 performers. eg. School Gym or hall or library if the school is small..
  • A temperature of 22c so the instruments work and don't break.
  • Chairs for the performers (best if the chairs are relatively straight and without arms)
  • Small table for props
  • Access to an electrical outlet.

As you can see our technical requirements are not extensive. We bring our own stands.

Typically the students sit on the floor or on benches. They can be quite close to the performers but we need enough space for the pit of doom and for the tasks to be carried out. A 10 ft space seems to work ok.
